XXXI: Fresh Start 2.0

What if we got our Christmas present early this year? We can grab it on Black Friday probably…

Thankfully, I’m still in awe at how good God is to us, especially considering that none of us deserve any of His grace. It’s been an adventurous, heart warming past couple weeks for Darco and myself. As noted in the earlier post, I was offered a teaching position at the school of my dreams for next year. I gladly accepted. Darco’s review for promotion was yesterday, and again I’m humbled to report that she also was promoted to store manager of her Starbucks location in the city. These are both major changes for both of our careers, each of which we hold delicately and passionately. Continue reading

Bragging on Darco here…

She’s recently been an acting “in-training” store manager for Starbucks. Tomorrow is her assessment to become a full-fledged store manager, so it only makes sense that her store was audited today…haha…

Starbucks has their own company that solely works at inspecting their stores throughout the country. They score each store off 100 points.

Remember, her assessment is tomorrow…
She just called me…
Her store just received a score of 93!

Just an amazing woman.

Mobile Minutes: Chicken Soup for the Runner

Productive day during this break from school. Cleaned the kitchen, made juice, cleaned the kitchen again, had lunch, and started dinner. The cloudy, cool, damp day wanted to keep me indoors, but thankfully Jim popped over to get me out of the apartment (flat on the Mazda3 needed to be changed out).

Afterwards, I felt the sudden inspiration to run “stadiums” (running up and down the flights of steps at a local football field) for my workout. I had forgotten that technically Thursday’s are my day of rest from running. Darco was gone for the day and night, so truly the day was up to me. Two hours later I finished my workout, grabbed coffee (haven’t had that in nearly a week), and headed home.

Finished my rehab workouts from my doctor, and hopped in the shower (shame on me, it had been two days). Upon finishing I checked on the dinner that I had started; a crock pot variety of chicken soup with gluten free pasta noodles.

Now? I’m sitting comfortably on the couch, preparing to watch a new episode of Arrow, iced coffee on the table, chicken soup in a bowl, and a calm glow from the lamp in the living room.

Truly, this is the best day of spring break to date.

Oh yeah…the department of education also said today that I qualify for a provisional social studies middle school certification without having to take their content examination!

XXXI: Unknown Travelers

A phrase I’ve heard more than once inside the school over the past several weeks, directed at students…

Being an adult isn’t always that fun. Right now, it stinks.

This usually coincided with sick days, retirement issues, and taxes. Continue reading

Famous!
A new grocery store opened up near where I work. Darco and I went exploring this past weekend to see what fresh, organic options we could find.

…we came home with a pound of chocolate covered espresso beans…

Naturally a photo of our find was required, and then that grocery chain sent it out on their Instagram feed.

I’m still laughing. Who knew eating healthy would be so entertaining?

XXXI: Time Travel

The weeks are beginning to blur together. Occasionally I’m beginning to hear, “Don’t burn yourself out”, and there have been a few days in the past two weeks that Darco and I have seen each other awake for a total of two hours in one day.

I suppose this is what it means to be working in your 20’s. The scary part that I’m beginning to notice is that when you’re in a job that you love, and I mean love, you tend to get so wrapped up in it that it can consume your day (and night). Insanely, this applies to myself and Darco. In her case it’s all about Starbucks. The kid lives, breathes, and owns* Starbucks. She’s currently an Assistant Store Manager, but we just learned her meeting in March will determine if she’s ready to move to a full time store manager position. I love hearing stories about her day, and how so many store managers throughout her district ask about her, and how in some cases she’s even becoming the model ‘trainee’ when working towards running one’s own store. I’ll never tell my students, but in many ways she’s the exact example of why people can be very successful even without wasting…spending time in college. Continue reading

Mobile Minutes: Burning Sensation

My morning…
To clarify: I went from 6:00 AM to 9:30 PM non-stop yesterday.
My morning…
I’m standing in the hallway at school. Watching the halls and chatting with the kids. Suddenly my left foot started to experience a strange burning sensation. Finally I stopped what I was doing and looked down at my foot.

…I had left the lid open on my coffee cup, and because of the angle I was holding it, I was pouring the hot contents all over my left shoe. Soaking my shoe and and my sock.

This was my morning…
